Birds and Grapes

Linocut, 6”x4”

Water-solouble ink let me make shadows just with a wet brush. The original of this image was a carving from a doorway in Palmyra. The Roman city was full of elaborate decorative work in carved stone: garlands, baskets, babies, fruit, birds, on and on. This piece survived because it was carved into the underside of an overhead door frame, which finally fell and sheltered the carved stonework face down in the sand.
