St Jerome Reading

Linocut with watercolor, 2011, 4”x6”

This little print is based on the bronze statue by Ivan Mestrovic in front of the Croatian Embassy, in Washington DC. It honors St. Jerome, the codifier of the Bible. St. Jerome was from Dalmatia, which appears to be the ancient name of Croatia. I love the statue, which is on Massachusetts Ave NW, pretty close to Dupont Circle. It's beyond the Phillips Collection and the Indian Embassy with its statue of Gandhi, and a few blocks north of the statue of the poet laureate of Ukraine, Taras Schevchenko. Washington has some great statuary.
