Echidna

Pen with colored pencil on toned paper, 2004, 9"x12".

This small endangered species from New Guinea is notably a mix of traits between reptiles and mammals. It holds its limbs sideways from the body, like reptiles, and lays eggs. But it also has a pouch for the newborns, and produces milk. I was astonished at the number of ribs. Drawn in the Galerie de Paleontologie et d'Anatomie Comparee, Paris.
